Starting January 1, 2026 , all vehicles circulating on Spanish roads must replace their warning triangles with a connected V16 beacon approved by the DGT.
This change is part of the digital transformation of road safety in Spain, under the framework of Royal Decree 159/2021 , which regulates roadside assistance services.
What does it mean to be mandatory?
This means that any driver who breaks down or has an accident must pre-signal their vehicle with a connected V16 beacon, instead of using traditional triangles.
These beacons are activated from inside the vehicle and automatically send their location to the DGT 3.0 platform, improving the response of emergency services and reducing risks.
Who is required to wear it?
The regulations affect:
- Passenger cars and private vehicles
- Vans and delivery vehicles
- Company fleets, taxis and VTC
- Trucks and industrial vehicles
- Renting and leasing vehicles

What happens if I don't wear it after 2026?
Failure to carry a connected V16 beacon will be considered an infraction starting January 1, 2026. Although the exact amount of the fine has not yet been determined, it is estimated to be comparable to not carrying triangles currently.
