With the arrival of connected V16 beacons , many drivers are wondering: Will the DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) constantly track me? The answer is clear: no .
V16 connected beacons are designed to improve road safety, not to monitor your location. Below, we explain how they actually work and why they respect your privacy in accordance with current regulations.
What data does the V16 beacon transmit?
Only when you activate it in an emergency situation (breakdown, accident, etc.), the beacon:
- Send your GPS location (coordinates of the stopped vehicle)
- Records the moment of activation (date and time)
- Indicates that there is a vehicle immobilized on the road
No personal data is sent : neither your name, nor your registration number, nor your chassis number.
When is the transmission activated?
The beacon only transmits its position if:
- It is turned on manually using the SOS button
- 100 seconds pass since activation
- It is located on a recognized public road (highway, highway, etc.)
If you turn it on in a garage, private parking lot, or turn it off before 100 seconds, no data is sent .
Who receives the information?
The data is transmitted exclusively to the DGT 3.0 platform, a digital system developed by the General Directorate of Traffic to manage road events in real time.
Its function is:
- Alert other users through panels or apps
- Inform the emergency services
- Improve traffic management in the event of an incident
Can the DGT follow me afterward?
No. The V16 beacon does not send any signal when it is off , nor does it record routes, nor does it allow subsequent tracking.
Furthermore, its connectivity is limited to occasional communications via NB-IoT or LTE-M , and it does not have a continuous connection or remote access.
Does it comply with data protection regulations?
Yes. The entire system is designed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) . DGT-approved beacons must comply with:
- Anonymous transmission
- No driver or vehicle identification
- Automatic disconnection after the event
