The connected V16 beacon is a hazard warning light that alerts other drivers to a breakdown or accident without having to leave the vehicle. Starting January 1, 2026 , it will be mandatory and will permanently replace emergency triangles throughout Spain.
What exactly is a V16 beacon?
This is a flashing LED light that is placed on the roof of the car in the event of a roadside incident. It is designed to be visible in 360°, even from more than 1 km away , both during the day and at night, in rain or fog.
What does it mean to be connected?
A connected V16 beacon, in addition to emitting light, features IoT (Internet of Things) technology that allows the vehicle's location to be automatically sent to the DGT 3.0 platform as soon as it is activated.
This is done via NB-IoT or LTE-M networks and doesn't require mobile coverage, a SIM card, or any app. The transmission is automatic and anonymous .
Why does it replace emergency triangles?
The regulations are changing for a key reason: driver safety . With triangles, the user has to get out of the vehicle and walk along the road to place them, which has caused numerous accidents in recent years.
With the V16 beacon:
- It is activated from inside the vehicle
- You don't need to get off or walk on the shoulder.
- Automatic geolocation allows emergency services to detect you sooner
When is its use mandatory?
Currently, you can use a V16 beacon as a complement to triangles, but from January 1, 2026, it will be the only legal pre-signalling system .
This is regulated by Royal Decree 159/2021 , which establishes the definitive replacement of the triangle with the approved connected beacon.
What requirements must a connected beacon meet?
- Be approved by the DGT (it appears on its official list)
- Have NB-IoT or LTE-M connectivity
- Emit visible light at 360º with minimum intensity for 30 minutes
- Send your location to the DGT anonymously
