The Hero Driver LED is a connected and approved V16 beacon that incorporates IoT technology to automatically send your location to the DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) in case of emergency. But what exactly happens when you press its activation button?
1. Manual activation from inside the vehicle
In the event of a breakdown or accident, the first step is to remove the beacon from the passenger compartment, place it on the roof of the vehicle and press the SOS button .
This button immediately turns on the LED flashing light , visible in 360° and at a distance of more than 1 km, meeting the pre-signalling requirements.
2. Start of 100-second “safety mode”
By regulation, once the power button is pressed, the Hero Driver LED beacon enters a 100-second standby mode before sending the position to the DGT 3.0 platform .
This period has two objectives:
- Give the user time to reposition the beacon or cancel its use if there is no real danger.
- Avoid accidental or unnecessary alerts, such as when handling it inside the car.
3. Automatic sending of the location to the DGT
After the safety time has elapsed, if the beacon remains on and detects that it is located on a public road or highway , the IoT module is activated and the GPS position is transmitted to the DGT via the NB-IoT or LTE-M network.
This shipment:
- It is automatic and does not require a mobile phone or app.
- It is done anonymously , without associating personal data.
- Allows emergency services to know the exact location of the incident.
4. What if the beacon is not on a track?
If the beacon is accidentally activated or placed in a location not connected to a public road (such as a garage, private property, or an area outside the road map), no notification will be issued to the DGT .
This is contemplated in the regulations and prevents false alerts or system saturation.
5. What does the regulation say?
According to Royal Decree 1030/2022 , which modifies Royal Decree 2822/1998, and the specifications of DGT Instruction MOV 21/2022 :
- Connected V16 beacons must incorporate a minimum delay of 100 seconds from when they are switched on until their location is sent.
- They should only broadcast their location if they are positioned on a public road or highway recognized on road maps.
- Shipping must be done via a low-power mobile network (NB-IoT or LTE-M).
